Development and Director

Resident Evil Requiem Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 1
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 45

Resident Evil Requiem is being developed by Capcom Division 1, the studio behind many flagship titles such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. Jun Takeuchi is helming this project, a key figure who has been instrumental in Capcom’s long-standing success.

The initial version of the game was conceived as an open-world format allowing players to explore freely and focusing primarily on multiplayer gameplay. Although a playable prototype was developed, this approach was ultimately abandoned.

The development team felt that multiplayer shouldn’t be a core element of the Resident Evil franchise, and they decided to return to the traditional single-player experience, believing it aligned better with fan expectations.

The director of this installment is Koshi Nakanishi, who previously worked on Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. He returns to helm the project once again. Nakanishi explained that the game’s core concept is “engaging horror” that will draw players in and make them unable to put the controller down.

It will build upon the core horror elements of Resident Evil 7, intensifying them even further. While the previous two installments, Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4, focused on rural and natural settings, this game shifts to a harsher tone of metal and urban environments, in a Metal & Noir style that creates a more oppressive, claustrophobic, and enclosed atmosphere.

Story and Character

Timeline

The story of Resident Evil Requiem is told in two timelines: 2018 and 2026. All events take place after the main games Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village. However, the game’s timeline remains before the events of the Shadows of Rose DLC, as that expansion’s content takes place in 2037.

Story

In 2018, the story focuses on Alyssa Ashcroft, who discovers a secret that the U.S. government has been hiding. This truth puts her and her daughter, Grace Ashcroft, in danger. They must survive a mysterious pursuit within the Wrenwood Hotel.

From the game’s trailers and released information, we learn that Alyssa died in the incident. This tragedy deeply affected Grace, causing her to become withdrawn and dedicate herself entirely to her work before embarking on a career as an FBI agent.

In 2026, the story focuses on Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy, who investigate the mysterious deaths of survivors of the Raccoon City Incident. This investigation brings Grace back to the Wrenwood Hotel, a place of past nightmares, where she confronts Victor Gideon before being taken to the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center.

Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 47

In the game’s trailer, Victor refers to Grace as “special” and the chosen one. He dedicates all his time to finding her, but why Victor wants her remains a mystery that we will have to uncover.

Meanwhile, Leon S. Kennedy is informed of the mysterious disappearance of an FBI agent in the area. During his investigation, he receives information and assistance from Sherry Birkin, who points to Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella Corporation researcher, as the primary suspect. This clue leads Leon to the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center to uncover the truth behind the entire incident.

However, his presence here is not solely for investigation, but also because of the lingering T-Virus infection in his body, a condition known as “Raccoon City Syndrome” in this game. There’s a possibility that Leon could become the next victim of this mysterious death case, forcing him to race against time to find a cure for his infection while simultaneously trying to help others suffering from the same condition.

Setting

Wrenwood City

Resident Evil Requiem Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 5 1
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 49

A fictional city located in the Midwest of the United States, not far from Raccoon City. Based on the information we currently have, this location is expected to be the opening scene or early area that players will explore first.

Wrenwood Hotel

6
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 50

The location of Alyssa Ashcroft’s murder, a nightmare that has haunted Grace ever since, is also where the fifth victim died from a condition known as Raccoon City Syndrome. This event leads Grace to be sent to investigate the case at this location, and it’s possible that players will explore it in two timelines: 2018 and 2026, starting from the beginning of the game.

Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center

7
7

The chronic care center is located not far from Raccoon City. Interestingly, the name Rhodes Hill has appeared once before in the Resident Evil universe, specifically in Resident Evil Outbreak File #2, within the Underbelly level.

This location was originally the old Umbrella Corporation building before being purchased by Victor Gideon after the company’s collapse. This place is likely a key location from the early to mid-game, where both Grace and Leon will investigate certain truths while surviving the dangers lurking within.

Raccoon City

Raccoon City, the cursed paradise that serves as the starting point for all the stories in the Resident Evil universe, was originally known as “Umbrella’s Home” because various viral experiments began there, leading to the unforgettable Raccoon City Incident, which claimed the lives of over one hundred thousand people.

This marks the first time players will revisit Raccoon City after it was destroyed by a missile in 1998. We expect this location to be a key setting that players will play through from the mid to the late stages of the game.

New Virus and Enemies

Raccoon City Syndrome

8
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 51

Raccoon City Syndrome is a latent condition caused by the T-Virus, where the virus remains in the body and mutates over a long period. Currently, there is no effective treatment, and when symptoms become apparent, the only outcome is death.

This syndrome develops in several stages as follows:

Stage 0: Dormant Stage

The virus remains dormant within the body because specific antibodies control it. However, the virus is not completely eliminated, and over time, it gradually adapts to develop resistance to those antibodies.

Phase 1: Activation Phase

The virus begins to become active again. Dark, bruise-like spots appear on the skin. Infected individuals begin to feel fatigued, unwell, and develop a cough.

Stage 2: Development

The dark lesions spread across the body, accompanied by numbness in the affected areas. As the infection spreads to internal organs, vomiting blood may occur.

Stage 3: The Final Stage (Terminal)

The dark spots become more pronounced and cover the entire body. Severe pain and weakness render the patient almost unable to move. Uncontrollable vomiting of blood occurs, and patients at this stage usually die within 1-2 hours.

Elpis Project

9
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 52

Currently, we do not have precise information about what this project is or what its objectives are.

However, official information has revealed that Project Elpis was a top-secret project of the U.S. government, with Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella Corporation T-Virus researcher, behind the main research. Furthermore, it suggests that the project may have been directly under the control of the White House.

Furthermore, in the latest trailer, Sherry Birkin informs Leon that she found no details about this project in any of the CIA or Pentagon databases.

It is therefore possible that Victor Gideon and the U.S. government may be collaborating on something closely guarded, something that could have a devastating impact on the world and potentially change it forever.

Zombie

10
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 53

Finally, the main enemy, the zombies, that fans have been waiting for, have returned. After Resident Evil took us to confront various parasites and fungi, in this game, zombies will once again be the main antagonist.

However, this time, they won’t be slow, mindless walking corpses anymore. The development team has confirmed that the zombies in this installment will still retain some human behavior and instincts. They can pick up objects around them and use them as weapons. If a zombie’s past was that of a cook, its behavior will revolve around the kitchen, and it might even grab a knife and attack the player.

Blister Head

11
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 54

However, the danger from the zombies doesn’t stop there. Even if players manage to eliminate them, they won’t be completely dead. We’ll need to find items to completely dispose of their corpses; otherwise, the bodies might mutate and revive in an even more dangerous form, known as Blister Heads. This system is similar to the Crimson Head system from the Resident Evil 1 Remake.

Chunk

12
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 55

A colossal monster with high bullet resistance, although there’s not much information about it yet, we anticipate that Chunk will be a mini-boss enemy we’ll face throughout the game.

Character

Grace Ashcroft

13
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 56

Grace, an introverted and easily frightened FBI intelligence analyst, is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a driven journalist and one of the survivors of the Raccoon City Incident, who was a key character in Resident Evil Outbreak.

In this installment, Grace is positioned as a clear representation of survival horror. The developers wanted players to experience the horror alongside her and witness her growth and struggle with her fears. Players will become more connected to her as they delve into her story and the revelations of her past within the game.

Leon S. Kennedy

114
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 57

Leon, an officer from the Division of Security Operations (DSO), is one of the survivors of the Raccoon City Incident and has extensive experience with biological weapons. This time, he’s investigating mysterious deaths in the US Midwest, inevitably drawing him into Grace’s story. In this installment, Leon is positioned as a representative of action horror, allowing players to experience his accumulated skills, experience, and combat abilities, which have honed and become even sharper since the events of Resident Evil 6.

Alyssa Ashcroft

15
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 58

One of the survivors of the Raccoon City Incident and a main character in the Resident Evil Outbreak game series, she is also Grace’s mother during the Raccoon City outbreak. A passionate journalist who never gives up, she risks her life to pursue the truth. She is a strong, determined woman who stands by her ideals. Even after the Raccoon City tragedy ended, she refused to stop uncovering the truth behind the Umbrella Corporation.

Nathan Dempsy

16
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 59

Grace’s boss from the FBI, despite knowing that Grace was still haunted by her mother’s death, assigned her the investigation into a series of recent deaths at the hotel where her mother died.

Emily

17
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 60

The mysterious girl Grace encounters while trying to survive inside the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center has pale skin and a frail build. Her true identity and role remain a mystery, and she may be hiding something crucial to the entire situation.

Victor Gideon

18
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 61

A former researcher for the Umbrella Corporation, the pharmaceutical company behind the Raccoon City Incident, he was an expert in T-Virus research. After the company’s collapse, he took over the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center and became a suspect in a series of bizarre deaths occurring across the United States.

Predicting characters who might return

19
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 62

Sherry Birkin

A mysterious character appears in the game’s fourth trailer, showing her as a support character for Leon’s mission. However, there’s no official confirmation that she is Sherry Birkin, the girl Leon saved in Resident Evil 2. Based on the details in the trailer, including her hair color and the tone and theme of her attire, many fans speculate that she might be Sherry Birkin.

Jill Valentine

20 1
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 63

When talking about T-Virus infection, it’s impossible not to think of Jill Valentine, as she’s one of the key characters in the Resident Evil universe who has immunity or antibodies to the virus. There were even rumors that she would be the main character in this game during the early stages of development, before the team decided to replace her with Leon. Therefore, we speculate that if the story in this installment involves the mutation or evolution of the T-Virus, we might see Jill Valentine return as well.

Ada Wong

21 1
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 64

Where there’s Leon, there’s Ada. Looking back at the main games featuring Leon S. Kennedy as the protagonist, Ada Wong has consistently played a significant role in the events of those games. Especially with rumors that this might be the conclusion of Leon’s story, it’s possible Ada might return and play a significant role as well. And if she does return, the complex relationship between the two could finally be resolved.

Gameplay Features

22 2
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 65

Two protagonists

Resident Evil Requiem has officially confirmed that players will take on the roles of Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy, each with distinctly different play styles.

  • Grace’s side will offer an atmosphere similar to the Resident Evil 2 Remake, focusing primarily on horror and survival—the core of survival horror. Players must be careful with resources and constantly face tense situations.
  • Meanwhile, Leon’s side offers an action-packed feel in the style of Resident Evil 4 Remake, emphasizing close-quarters combat, quick reflexes, and the use of wit to solve immediate problems.

This game marks the first time Leon returns as a main character since Resident Evil 6, with the key concept behind the character design being the question, “What will Leon be like in 2026?”

From the events of Resident Evil 2 to Resident Evil 6, Leon’s combat skills have steadily improved, and this game will showcase that progress with new elements that build upon the action system of Resident Evil 4 Remake.

In terms of storytelling and gameplay highlights, this installment features a continuous, single storyline, unlike the A-B storylines of Resident Evil 2. However, scenes between Leon and Grace will alternate, similar to Jill and Carlos from Resident Evil 3. They will interact in cutscenes and separate during gameplay.

Early in the game, Grace is portrayed as the most vulnerable and fearful character, while Leon represents strength and battle-hardened experience. The convergence of these contrasting characters, forcing them to face similar situations, becomes one of the game’s key highlights and provides a fresh, engaging experience for players.

With two protagonists, the gameplay is divided equally between Grace and Leon; you’ll play as Grace for half the time and Leon for the other. The experience will be drastically different, with Grace delivering the horror and Leon the action, creating a cycle of tension and relaxation similar to that of the first Resident Evil Revelations.

Combat

23
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 66

As mentioned above, the two main characters will have different experiences, resulting in completely different gameplay for each of them.

From Grace’s perspective, the game focuses on a full-fledged survival horror atmosphere. She must survive with limited resources, and analyzing enemies to determine when to “fight” and when to “flee” is key to her gameplay.

Grace starts with only eight inventory slots, similar to the inventory system in Resident Evil 2 Remake. Players will therefore need to constantly plan which weapons to carry, how many healing items to bring, and how much space to allocate for key items. Managing inventory space becomes a crucial gameplay mechanic for her.

Another standout system is Grace’s Crafting system, which adds a new dimension to her survival. She can collect the blood of defeated enemies to use as materials for crafting items such as bullets and special injections that can eliminate certain types of enemies in a single hit.

24 1
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 67

Leon, on the other hand, is a clear opposite of Grace. His gameplay leans towards action horror. He can use a variety of firearms, including his signature axe, which plays a crucial role in this game. This includes using it to execute enemies when they’re stunned, for melee attacks, and for parrying crucial enemy attacks, similar to the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Furthermore, Leon can pick up enemy weapons and use them as his own in certain situations, making combat more intense and fluid.

In terms of item management, Leon’s inventory system is completely different from Grace’s. Leon’s system is similar to Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake, allowing players to freely arrange weapons, ammunition, and healing items. This results in Leon being able to carry significantly more equipment.

Furthermore, his weapons can be upgraded through special customization parts, increasing attack power, ammunition capacity, accuracy, or reload speed, clearly highlighting the difference between Grace’s “survival” approach and Leon’s “thrilling action.”

Furthermore, another ability that both characters share is the stealth system, which allows players to utilize timing and environmental factors to sneak through or quietly eliminate enemies, minimizing unnecessary confrontations. This also helps conserve ammunition and healing items, allowing players to save them for truly critical moments.

Camera Perspectives

25 1
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 68

This installment marks the first time players can freely switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. The development team stated that they had to recreate all the models and animations for each camera angle to achieve the highest quality in UI design, game balance, sound, and other detailed elements. Essentially, it’s like developing “two games in one.”

If you’re still undecided about which perspective to choose, we recommend that for the ultimate Resident Evil Requiem experience, try playing from Grace’s perspective in First Person to fully immerse yourself in the horror, and from Leon’s perspective in Third Person to unleash his full action potential.

Difficulty

26
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything we know about Resident Evil 9 69

Another classic returning in this installment, which should bring a big smile to veteran fans, is the save cartridge. The game allows players to choose their preferred difficulty level: Standard (Modern), which features a modern autosave system, or Standard (Classic), which requires a save cartridge like the original Resident Evil. The developers also recommend that die-hard fans of the franchise should try the Standard (Classic) mode at least once. Note that this mode only affects Grace’s story.

Technical Specs

RE Engine

Resident Evil Requiem continues to be developed using Capcom’s in-house RE Engine, as before, but we anticipate that there’s a high possibility that the version used in this installment might be an upgraded version of the engine.

Back in 2023, Capcom announced plans to upgrade its game engine, the REX Engine (RE neXt Engine), which was positioned as the foundation for their next generation of games. This upgrade wasn’t a complete engine overhaul, but rather a gradual development of the original RE Engine.

This upgrade means Resident Evil Requiem will fully support modern graphics technologies, enhancing both image quality and display performance. This includes Ray Tracing and Path Tracing, which realistically calculate light, shadow, and reflections.

In terms of performance, the game supports DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation technology, which helps increase frame rates and image smoothness, allowing players to enable high-level graphic effects without sacrificing a choppy gameplay experience.

PlayStation 5 Performance

Performance Mode vs Fidelity Mode

According to information from Koshi Nakanishi in an interview on PlayStation’s official blog, players on the PS5 Pro can choose to enable or disable Ray Tracing. With Ray Tracing enabled, players can play games at 4K resolution at 60 FPS with full Ray Tracing. With Ray Tracing disabled, games will support a maximum frame rate of 120 FPS (averaging around 90 FPS) on high refresh rate displays. This feature for the standard PS5 has not yet been confirmed.

Nintendo Switch 2 Performance

Handheld Mode vs Docked Mode

Based on recent hands-on previews, many media outlets have agreed that Resident Evil Requiem runs impressively on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game supports a maximum frame rate of 60 FPS, with an average of around 40-60 FPS in both handheld and docked modes, which is a very impressive result for a AAA game on a portable console.
